R-Type Tactics for the PSP is a turn-based strategy game, known as R-Type Command in North America and Europe, that deviates from the series' traditional side-scrolling shooter roots by featuring grid-based, mission-based tactical combat. Players command fleets of unique units and spacecraft, utilizing electronic warfare, unit development, and strategic deployment to overcome the enemy Bydo Empire or fight as the Bydo. The game offers single-player campaigns, multiplayer wireless combat, and cinematic battle animations, though it received mixed reviews for its slower pace compared to the main series, with a sequel, R-Type Tactics II, released exclusively in Japan
