Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for the PSP is an action RPG prequel to the original Final Fantasy VII, following Zack Fair as he rises through the ranks of the SOLDIER program, facing monsters and learning about the events that lead to the original game. The game features fast-paced, hack-and-slash combat, optional side missions, a material system for upgrades, and the unique Digital Mind Wave (DMW) slot machine mechanic that provides random buffs and affects character progression. While the story is emotional and provides crucial context for the Final Fantasy VII saga, the PSP's technical limitations and its somewhat repetitive mission structure are notable drawbacks.
